What short form editing really is

Short form isn't a long video chopped into pieces. It's its own format. People are swiping with their thumb on the screen, so every second has to earn the next one. A good edit finds the strongest moment, opens on it, and keeps the pace up until the point lands.

That usually means tight cuts, captions people can read on mute, punch-ins on the important lines, and sound design that makes the video feel alive. None of it should feel like a template.

What we focus on in every short

  • The hook. We test the first line and the first frame before anything else. If the opening doesn't stop the scroll, nothing after it matters.
  • Pacing. We cut dead air and filler words, but we keep the natural rhythm of how you talk so it still sounds like you.
  • Captions. Clean, on-brand and timed to speech, so the video works with the sound off.
  • One clear next step. Follow, comment, click, book a call. Pick one and make it obvious.

What to send your editor

The better the input, the better the output. Before the first edit, send:

  • The raw footage, or a long video you want clipped.
  • Two or three shorts you love, from you or anyone else, so we can match the feel.
  • Your fonts, colours and logo if you have a brand kit.
  • Who the video is for and what you want them to do after watching.

Freelancer, tool or team?

AI clipping tools are fine for rough cuts. A solo freelancer can work well at low volume. Once you're posting a lot, or running several accounts, consistency becomes the hard part. That's where a team helps, because the style doesn't change when one person is away. If you're weighing it up, read our take on freelance editors vs a video agency.

Where to start

Have a look at the shortform edits in our work to see the style. If it fits, tell us what you're posting and we'll take it from there. Running ads too? Our guide to direct response video editing covers that side.
